DUBAI: A young Asian man has been arrested by Dubai Police after a viral video showed him recklessly driving at high speeds on the hard shoulder, overtaking vehicles dangerously.

The footage raised serious concerns as the driver’s actions put his life and other road users at great risk.

Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Director of the General Department of Traffic, confirmed that traffic patrols quickly launched an investigation following the circulation of the video. The driver was captured operating his vehicle at unsafe and excessive speeds, violating traffic laws.

Such dangerous behaviour, Al Mazrouei stated, disregards human lives and represents a serious breach of legal and ethical responsibilities on the road. He highlighted that sharing videos like these encourages others to imitate reckless conduct, increasing the risk of accidents.

Investigation launched

Specialised teams from the General Department of Traffic swiftly identified and apprehended the driver. Legal actions were taken under Decree No. 30 of 2023 concerning vehicle impoundment, which imposes a fine of Dh 50,000 for releasing impounded vehicles. The driver has been referred to the relevant authorities for further legal proceedings.

Statistics reveal that about 80 percent of similar traffic violators have been involved in severe accidents resulting in fatalities or serious injuries. Al Mazrouei emphasised that such behavior endangers not only drivers but also pedestrians.

Legal measures

Dubai Police reiterated that dangerous driving violations will not be tolerated. The department urges the public to report hazardous road behaviour through the “Police Eye” feature on the Dubai Police app or via the “We Are All Police” hotline at 901.

Al Mazrouei also called for collective responsibility in fostering safer roads. He assured that Dubai Police will continue using advanced technologies and intelligent systems to monitor and deter traffic violations around the clock, safeguarding all road users.
